Letter from the Waldo President |

It has been my pleasure to get to know most of the business owners in the Waldo community after joining the Waldo Area Business Association five years ago when I accepted the branch manager position at UMB (85th and Wornall Road). It has been exciting and interesting to watch the businesses grow and to watch the contributions made to the community over this period of time.
We continue to see improvement up and down the Waldo business area from Gregory Blvd. to 91st and Holmes to State Line with the addition of The Well, the new Botwin Building housing Kennedy's, Coffee Girls and Wirken Photography; the Waldo Fountain, and Armour Oaks (new senior residential housing). Other inspiring changes include Swaggers Restaurant & Lounge, Tasso's Greek Restaurant, and many more new businesses. The completion of the Waldo Community Improvement District (CID) project brings many opportunities to market the Waldo area as the place to be in 2010! Marti and her crew have worked tirelessly to get this project rolling, and we have already seen the fruits of our labor with the Waldo Wizards (clean-up crew) and the Waldo Roadrunners (area awareness officers).
Waldo has grown significantly in the past year, and will continue to do so in the future. I am very eager to see what 2010 brings for Waldo.

Cell Phones for Soldiers |

More than 150,000 troops are serving overseas and are away from their families. Cell Phones for Soldiers and Muehlebach Funeral Home are calling on all Americans to support these brave men and women by donating your unused cell phones. Cell Phones for Soldiers hopes to collect over 50,000 cell phones this year to help keep troops connected with their families.
Cell Phones for Soldiers was created by Brittany and Robbie Bergquist of Norwell, MA. After reading a story about a soldier who ran up a huge phone bill calling home from Iraq, these two teenagers decided to help out. They started by opening an account with $21 of their own money. They are collecting cash donations and old cell phones. The cell phones are recycled for cash and the proceeds are used to buy prepaid calling cards for our soldiers serving in the Middle East. CellPhones For Soldiers is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Their efforts have motivated people and businesses around the country to donate to this worthy cause. Their goal is to provide every US soldier with a way to call home for free. The donated phones are sent to ReCellular, which pays Cell Phones for Soldiers for each phone - enough to provide an hour of talk time to soldiers abroad.
Local residents can support the collection drive by donating their phones at Muehlebach Funeral Home, 6800 Troost Avenue, Kansas City, MO 64131, (816)

Free Legal Services for Low-Income Taxpayers |
The Kansas City Tax Clinic provides free legal services for low-income taxpayers in controversy with the IRS. Controversies such as when the IRS takes your wages for back taxes, when the IRS denies your claim for the Earned Income Credit, when your refund is taken and applied to someone else's taxes, etc. The Kansas City Tax Clinic is a project of the UMKC Graduate Tax Law Foundation. Students in the UMKC School of Law tax program represent the clients under the supervision of the Clinic's Directors. As the Clinic has taken on more and more clients, they have been able to enroll additional students in the class each semester. Through the work done in the Clinic these students are able to learn first hand how to work for a client, as well as gaining vital experience working with the IRS.
The Kansas City Tax Clinic is located at 52nd and Oak in the UMKC School of Law. For further information please call (816) 235-6201.

Did you know....in 1844, Dr. Waldo, after having sold a tremendous amount of merchandise in Santa Fe and Chihuahua, Mexico, returned to Independence with a fortune in gold and silver? He invested it in more real estate in Jackson County and in a bank in Independence. In 1860, the census taker that year estimated Dr. Waldo's holdings in Jackson County alone at $150,000 and his personal property at $75,000. A 2 ˝ acre tract of Dr. Waldo's land was purchased by John B. Wornall and Jimmie White to build a school house. It is now known as Border Star School.

Message to Waldo Area Businesses |

Waldo business owners believe that our customers are our friends. Whatever affects them, concerns us. We are doing our part to assist residents and homes associations as we all work together to help the police address criminal activity.
The Waldo Area Business Association supports the work of the Kansas City Police Department and assists them in communicating with merchants regarding criminal activity in our area. Many of our members have donated products and services to support the efforts of the police, residents, and homes associations. They have posted notices in their places of business, and they have made facilities available for a rally, self defense classes, and meetings with the police. In addition, The Waldo Area Business Association has made a donation to the Waldo reward fund. We encourage our members to continue these and other efforts as needed.
We know that the residents, business owners, churches, schools, and other organizations are what make our area unique, and what will keep our area strong.
If you have information regarding criminal activity in our area, please call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477).
If you would like to donate to the Waldo reward fund, please direct your donation to the Waldo branch of UMB Bank located at 8442 Wornall Rd., 816-276-8150.
