The water tower in Tower Park at 76th and Holmes in 1975 was designated Missouri's first American Water Landmark, and is also on the National Register of Historic Places. It was a working tower until 1957. A picture of the tower appeared in the World Book Encyclopedia each year from 1929 through 1946 as an early example of reinforced concrete construction. One of the battles of Westport was fought where the South Broadland Presbyterian Church stands now at 78th and Holmes, formerly the old Mackbee (or Mockbee) farm. At one time there was a lake, called Waldo Lake, between what is now Walnut and Grand, and 71st Street to 72nd Street. What was the original club house is now a residence on the west side of Walnut, south of 71st. This was probably sometime in the 1920's. A long time resident remembers playing on the lake shore with his brother when they were small children. The Waldo Area Business Association is a highly visible organization and now in the year 2000 numbers 185 members. It has assisted city planners in developing the Waldo Area Plan and has provided administrative support and technical assistance to area businesses in dealing with city codes, zoning, liquor control and ordinance requirements. |

It sponsors a facade improvement program, a yearly directory, monthly
newsletters, as well as the Waldo Fall Festival, monthly luncheon meetings,
and AM and PM networking events. It is active in crime prevention in the area,
and in conjunction with the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority, raised
funds for the construction of the Waldo monument at 75th and Wornall Road. Mrs.
Marie Bolls succeeded Miss Ruth Bradfield as Executive Secretary, and at her
retirement Mrs. Marti Lee took over the duties of Executive Secretary of the
Waldo Business Association.
